Human Misery and the Rejection of God’s Order
In today’s powerful homily, Fr. Mark Baron, MIC reflects on a fundamental question facing Christians: Will we accept God’s order, or will we attempt to redefine reality according to our own desires?
Looking at difficult issues in modern culture; including the dignity of human life, abortion, human sexuality, biological reality, and the priesthood, Fr. Baron points to a deeper spiritual struggle: the temptation to believe that we can determine for ourselves what is good rather than receiving truth and goodness from God.
God is the Creator, and His order is good. Human life is precious because it comes from Him. Yet because of sin, we experience disordered inclinations, pride, weakness, and what St. Faustina describes as human “misery.” This misery is more than emotional suffering; it reveals our profound spiritual poverty and our inability to attain holiness and salvation by our own strength.
The answer is humility and dependence upon God.
Jesus calls us to become like little children; recognizing that we need our Heavenly Father just as a child depends upon his parents. We are not the originators of truth or goodness. God is.
The Father desires to make us saints according to His standards, not ours. He is our Creator, our Savior, and our sovereign Lord. When we recognize our weakness, surrender our pride, and trust in His mercy, we allow Him to lead us back into the goodness and harmony for which we were created.
