What Women Disciples Did That the 12 Didn't | Fr. Chris Alar, MIC
Fr. Chris Alar reflects on how Luke’s Gospel highlights the many women who followed and supported Jesus. They came from very different backgrounds—some were wealthy, some poor, and some, like Mary Magdalene, had experienced great suffering and deliverance. Yet Jesus brought them together without regard for status or position. While the apostles sometimes struggled with questions of rank and importance, these women demonstrated a quieter discipleship. They were grateful simply to follow Jesus and willingly used their time, resources, and gifts to support his ministry, often serving faithfully in the background without seeking recognition.
Their example reminds us that following Christ is not about titles, positions, or being noticed, but about loving and serving. Jesus himself came “not to be served but to serve,” and these women imitated him through their generous service. Their contribution also shows that the mission of the Church has always depended on teamwork: some serve publicly while others serve quietly, but all contribute to the same mission and share equally in God’s grace. Women continued to play important roles of service in the early Church, supporting Christian communities and helping the Gospel spread. Their witness challenges us to serve Christ with humility and gratitude, whether our work is seen by others or remains hidden.
