When people hear the term “Antipope,” they often wonder, “Doesn’t the existence of anti-Popes prove that the papacy isn't real? Or they ask, “If there were rival Popes, how can the Catholics know who the real Pope is?”
The answer is actually quite reassuring. Rather than disproving the Papacy, the history of anti-Popes actually demonstrates that the Church has always recognized that there can only be one legitimate Successor of St. Peter. Father Chris Alar, MIC, explains.
