Before You Die, Put Your House in Order

In this powerful homily for Friday, July 17, 2026, Fr. Daniel Klimek reflects on memento mori; the ancient spiritual practice of remembering that one day we will die. Death is inevitable, but contemplating it is not intended to fill us with despair. Instead, it awakens us to the importance of living every day with God and preparing our hearts for eternity. Our actions, choices, and daily decisions have eternal consequences. Fr. Daniel encourages us to put our spiritual house in order, turn away from sin, and contemplate the realities of Heaven and hell. God may draw us toward repentance through a deep love that desires to please Him or through a holy fear of being eternally separated from Him. Both remind us of what God desires to save us from and the eternal life He desires to give us. The readings for this homily: https://bible.usccb.org/bible/readings/011226.cfm Father Daniel Klimek, PhD reflects on the beginning of Christ’s public ministry and the radical call of discipleship. When Jesus calls the first apostles, He does not simply invite admiration, but demands surrender. Peter leaves his nets behind—his livelihood, his security, his safety—to follow Christ. Those nets, Fr. Daniel explains, symbolize the attachments and “safety nets” that often keep us from deeper freedom in God.
God has spoken to mankind throughout the centuries, especially through Scripture, and we refer to that as public revelation. But that ended with the death of the last Apostle. However, Fr. Thaddaeus Lancton, MIC, explains how God continues to relate to us through private revelation. Then hear Catholic singer and songwriter Anna Nuzzo and Fr. Daniel Klimek discuss the spiritual richness of Medjugorje during their recent pilgrimage.
The Feast of the Transfiguration (Aug. 6), the moment when Jesus reveals His divine glory to Peter, James, and John on the top of the mountain, is a powerful reminder of who He truly is and who we’re called to become in Him. Father Daniel Klimek reflects more deeply on this mystery, with a special teaching drawn from his own book. Then meet Paul Darrow, who through an encounter with Divine Mercy and Mother Angelica, experienced a profound conversion.
