Who Anointed Jesus' Feet? It's Not Who We Were Told... | Fr. Chris Alar, MIC
Fr. Chris Alar, MIC, reflects on the Gospel as a powerful revelation of the mercy of Jesus and the transformation that occurs when we approach Him with repentance, humility, and trust. The woman who comes to Jesus in tears demonstrates that true repentance is more than simply saying we are sorry; it is a sincere return of the heart to God.
Fr. Chris explains that Divine Mercy offers us a path back to God through trust: “Jesus, I trust in You.” Jesus has the authority to forgive sins, and in Catholic teaching, He entrusted His apostles with a ministry of reconciliation that continues through the priesthood.
The forgiven woman shows what happens when a person truly encounters Christ’s mercy. Her forgiveness leads to conversion, humility, gratitude, and profound love. She does not express her faith only through words; her actions reveal the change taking place within her. Her tears and loving gestures become outward signs of repentance and gratitude.
The teaching reminds us that an encounter with the holiness and mercy of Jesus should transform the way we live. Repentance opens our hearts to mercy, forgiveness leads to conversion, and gratitude for God’s mercy becomes visible through acts of love. Our words of faith and love are meant to be accompanied by lives that reflect them.
