Sanctity in Modern Times: Learning from the Saints of Our Century | Fr. David Gunter, MIC

On the Feast of St. Faustina, Fr. David Gunter, MIC, reflected on the importance of paying attention to the saints God has raised up in more recent centuries. Each of them speaks in a particular way to the struggles of the modern world. St. Thérèse of Lisieux showed the beauty of simplicity and the “little way” at a time when society was rapidly changing. St. Padre Pio dedicated his life to healing souls, carrying the wounds of Christ, and calling people back to prayer; in particular, he urged the faithful to hold tightly to the Rosary. These saints lived in times that were becoming increasingly complex, yet they reminded the world that holiness remains possible through humility, prayer, sacrifice, and trust in God.

St. Faustina, whose life was marked by suffering, fear, and profound trust, was chosen to bring the message of Divine Mercy to the world. Through her devotion to the Passion of Christ and to His unfathomable mercy, she teaches us how to embrace holiness in a world that often wants little to do with it. Fear can become an instrument of the devil when it keeps us from doing God’s will, but Faustina shows us that fear can be transformed through trust. The saints were human like us, but they freely chose to follow the will of God. He never forces us; rather, the Holy Spirit invites us, and our lives begin to change when we say yes. Despite her fears and limitations, Faustina allowed herself to be used by God to prepare the world to receive His mercy and to be ready for Christ’s coming.
