The Love of the Father in Our Suffering | Fr. Tyler Mentzer, MIC
Fr. Tyler Mentzer, MIC, reflects on today’s Gospel by reminding us that the Lord is leading us into His holiness and teaching us to trust the love of the Father, even through suffering. God may permit trials and spiritual desolation, as St. Ignatius of Loyola teaches, so that we can recognize our poverty and our complete dependence on Him. Suffering can reveal how little we truly control and help us see that everything we have is a gift from God.
The story of Job shows this trust clearly. After losing nearly everything precious to him, Job still recognized that he came into the world with nothing and would leave it the same way, and he continued to bless the name of the Lord. In our own suffering, instead of only asking, “Why is this happening to me?” we can ask, “Lord, what are You trying to teach me through this?” We may not understand the answer, but we can trust that God is a good Father who is strengthening us, forming us, and drawing us deeper into His love.
