Fr. Tyler Mentzer, MIC, reminds us today, as we celebrate the feast of St. Januarius, that our Christian life is meant to bear abundant fruit for the Kingdom of God. St. Januarius lived during a time when Christianity was persecuted and not yet accepted, yet he remained faithful to Christ even unto martyrdom. From his life, we learn the fruit of perseverance—a faith that continues to bear fruit even after death. Through his courageous witness, he led others to Jesus, and even today his life continues to testify to our hope in eternal life. Like a seed planted in good soil, a life rooted in Christ can produce fruit far beyond what we ourselves may ever see.
How, then, do we become good and holy soil in the world? We can look to the Blessed Virgin Mary as our model. Mary received the Word of God with an open and humble heart, allowed it to take root within her, and faithfully gave herself to God's will. To become fruitful, we too must make our hearts good soil—open to God's Word, nourished by prayer and the sacraments, and willing to persevere through difficulties. When we follow Mary's example and allow Jesus to live and work within us, our lives can become fertile ground through which God plants seeds of faith, hope, and love, bearing abundant fruit for His Kingdom.
