All Saints' Day & All Souls' Day: It's Critical! | fr. Chris Alar
The teaching explains the importance of All Souls Day, or the Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed, especially in the spirituality of the Marian Fathers. It is a special day to pray for those who have died and to ask God to grant them the grace of purification and entrance into heaven.
Fr. Chris Alar, MIC, explains that this celebration is part of Allhallowtide, which includes All Hallows’ Eve (Halloween), All Saints Day, and All Souls Day. All Saints Day honors all those who are already in heaven, including saints who were never formally canonized or given their own feast day. The saints are examples of how to live faithfully as disciples of Christ, and Christians may ask for their intercession before God.
All Souls Day focuses especially on the faithful departed who are still undergoing purification. Catholic teaching understands Purgatory not as a second chance after death, but as a final purification from attachments to sin and from the effects and consequences of sins already forgiven. Through Confession, sins can be forgiven, but purification may still be needed so that a person is fully prepared to enter the presence of God.
For this reason, Catholics pray and offer Masses for the souls in Purgatory. These prayers are an act of love and mercy, asking God to hasten their purification and bring them into the fullness of eternal life. The teaching reminds us both to pray for our deceased loved ones and to prepare our own souls to meet the Lord.
